SCALING LAWS

Shrinking changes physics.

If every dimension shrinks by a factor of 10:

Length

L

1 / 10

Area

L²

1 / 100

Volume

L³

1 / 1,000
Area and volume do not shrink at the same rate.

SURFACE EFFECTS

Surface area matters more.

◻️ → ▫️ → ·

As an object becomes smaller, its volume decreases faster than its surface area.

That means the surface-area-to-volume ratio increases as size decreases.

Smaller devices are influenced more strongly by surface-related effects.

MICROSCALE PHYSICS

Different forces dominate.

Gravity

Becomes relatively less significant as structures shrink.

Electrostatics

Can remain very useful for sensing and actuation.

MEMS cannot simply be designed as tiny versions of ordinary machines.
