THE VOLTAGE WINDOW

Why voltage is the prize

E = ½ C V²

Stored energy grows with the square of the voltage. Doubling the capacitance doubles the energy, but doubling the voltage quadruples it. So the voltage window an electrolyte allows is worth more than almost any other property.

Widen the window and energy climbs fast, which is why electrolytes are tied so closely to energy density.

WHAT LIMITS THE WINDOW

Where the electrolyte gives up

ā¬‡ļø

Reduction limit

At the negative electrode, the ions or solvent start to gain electrons and break down

ā¬†ļø

Oxidation limit

At the positive electrode, they start to lose electrons and break down

ā†”ļø

The window

The gap between the two limits is the voltage range the cell can safely use

Past a limit, charge goes into destroying the electrolyte instead of storing energy.

READING THE EDGES

How to spot a window on a CV

Flat, box-shaped trace Charge is being stored capacitively, so the electrolyte is stable
Sharp current rise at either end Side reactions are breaking the electrolyte down
The cut-off matters Papers pick a current threshold, so a window depends on how it was defined
The electrode matters The same electrolyte can show different limits on carbon, metal, or oxide
A quoted window is a measurement with conditions attached, not a constant of nature.

PUSHING TOO FAR

What happens past the limit

Gas Gas forms and can swell a sealed cell
Resistance Breakdown products raise resistance and fade capacity
Leakage Side reactions raise leakage current and speed up self-discharge
Safety In the worst cases, heat and pressure build up
This is why cells are rated with margin below the limit: margin buys lifetime.
