Where in the bodyMost of the body's serotonin is made in the gut, and only a small share is in the brain
In the brainNeurons in the raphe nuclei of the brainstem send fibers across the brain
Serotonin is a gut molecule as much as a brain molecule.
ROLES
A broad modulator
😊
Mood
Linked to depression and anxiety
😴
Sleep
Helps regulate sleep cycles
🍽️
Appetite
Influences hunger and fullness
🫃
Gut
Controls gut movement
Serotonin tunes many systems at once.
SSRIs
Block the cleanup
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors block the serotonin transporter, so serotonin lingers in the cleft.
A drug that blocks the off switch lengthens the message.
REALITY CHECK
Not instant, not simple
TimingSSRIs raise serotonin within hours, but benefits for mood often take weeks
MeaningThat delay shows the effect involves slower adaptation, not just higher levels
ReceptorsSerotonin acts on more than a dozen receptor subtypes, so drugs differ in effects
The picture is more complicated than a simple chemical imbalance.
MEASURING IT
A tough one to catch
Serotonin is present at very low levels and tends to stick to electrodes and foul them, which makes it one of the harder neurotransmitters to measure in real time. Engineers use special coatings and waveforms to cope.
A sensor has to be selective and also resist sticking.
